ORCHARD, ARTHUR WILLIAM
Studio portrait of 2493 Private Arthur William Orchard, 7th Reinforcements, 12th Battalion, of Launceston, Tas. A clerk prior to enlisting on 17 March 1915, he embarked from Adelaide, SA, aboard HMAT Kanowna on 24 June 1915. He died of wounds, aged 21, on 15 July 1917 in Belgium, and is buried in Dickebusch Cemetery
Mr. C. Orchard, of the Devonport Council's clerical staff was yesterday advised by cable that his youngest brother Bombardier. Arthur Orchard, who is a son of Mr A. W. Orchard, of Launceston had been killed in action in France. He was only 19 years of age. When war broke out two of his brothers were accepted for service, but the deceased was a member of the Naval Reserves. He did duty in the vicinity of Hobart for some months, after which he was accepted for the infantry, and landed in Egypt shortly after the Gallipoli evacuation. There he was transferred to the artillery and had been in action for the past 12 months without a spell. The North Western Advocate 24th July 1917
