Studio portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) Penistan James Patterson, 12th Battalion. A professional soldier from Ballarat, Vic, Lt Patterson embarked with C Company from Hobart on HMAT Geelong on 20 October 1914. On 25 April 1915 he took part in the landing at Gallipoli and was mentioned in despatches. Later that day he was killed in action and is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Turkey
