Payne Lancelot Joseph

 

 

Born 21st February 1896 Devonport Tasmania to John Wollard and Katherine Payne (nee Giles) a student he departed Hobart 1st July 1916 on board “HMAT Berrima” with the 40th Infantry Battalion and the rank of private.

 

Military Cross awarded 26th May 1917

“On the morning of the 25/3/1917 this officer took charge of a fighting patrol to feel the village of Norieul during the attack on Lagnicourt by three battalions on the right.  The patrol was driven back and Lieutenant Payne volunteered to go out again with a stronger patrol, which he did, and pushed forward close to the village under heavy shell and machine gun fire, and eventually when the patrol was driven back by very strong opposition Lt Payne remained behind and carried in a badly wounded man.”

 He was serving with the 25th Battalion when he was hit in the stomach by a piece of shell and died 30th May 1918 at the Casualty Clearing Station at Vignacourt. He was buried in the Vignacourt British Cemetery, France
