Penty Basil
"The All Australian Memorial History, Heroes and Helpers" Born 10th June 1894 Stanley Tasmania to Robert and Charlotte Penty (nee Beedham) an analytical chemist who departed Sydney 16th June 1915 on board “HMAT Karoola” with the 3rd Infantry Battalion. He was killed in action 1st January 1917 in France and is commemorated in the Guards' Cemetery, Lesboeufs, France. His brother Robert Eric Penty (No 3711) was also killed in action 28th July 1916 and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France. News has been received that Private Basil Penty formerly of Stanley was killed in action on New Year's Day in France. Leaving early in the war with the sixth reinforcements of the Third Battalion he went through the Gallipoli campaign being severely wounded at Lone Pine. Later, on recovering, he went successfully through the attack at Pozieres. Here one of his brothers was killed in action. He was the youngest son of Rev. R. and Mrs. Penty formerly of Tasmania, and a brother of Mr. Fred Downie of Dungrove, Bothwell. By profession he was an analytical chemist. The Examiner 29th January 1917
