Plunkett Edwin William Duncan
Born 14th March 1890 New Norfolk Tasmania the only child to Edwin and Mary Plunkett (nee McColl) a farmer who embarked Melbourne 25th October 1916 on board “HMAT Ulysses” with the 40th Infantry Battalion. He was killed instantly 7th June 1917 when hit by a shell (friendly) and badly damaged down one side at Messines and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Mr. Edwin Plunkett, of Glen Fern, has received news that
his only son, Edwin William Duncan Plunkett, has been
killed somewhere in France. The deceased, who enlisted
in October, 1916 had been married a week only when he
went into camp. He was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. E.
Plunkett. A cousin, Frederick Plunkett, was
killed in France on the 28th July,
1916, and two other cousins, Rory Plunkett and Alan
Plunkett, sons of Mr. C. J. Plunkett, Tyndwald, New
Norfolk, have been wounded. Rory Plunkett had his
equipment shot off his back, and his gas helmet riddled
with bullets. His brother, Alan Plunkett, had his coat
perforated with bullets, but from advices received both
