Poole Gordon Alfred

Born 26th June 1894 Waratah Tasmania the son of William Charles and Caroline Fanny Poole (nee Bennett) a miner he embarked 2nd February 1915 on board “HMAT Clan McGillivray” with the 15th Infantry Battalion.

He died 7th May 1915 on board the hospital ship “Gloucester Castle” from wounds received in action on the Gallipoli Peninsula and was buried at sea.  He is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli Peninsula Turkey

On Saturday morning Mrs C Poole of Latrobe received the sad news of the death of her 5th son Private Gordon Poole who died on the 12th instant from wounds received at the Dardanelles in the 21st year of his age.  He was a fine stamp of young man and of a retiring disposition – at the same time he was a great favourite with his fellow soldiers.  He was a native of Waratah and for some years he lived at Devonport and Latrobe.  For the last three years he worked on the West Coast as a miner and enlisted from the latter place for the first contingent but was not accepted until the 3rd contingent on account of his teeth.  He has a brother Charles at the front who enlisted from New Zealand.
