Pulford, Charles Lewis
Born Ross Tasmania the son of William and Diana Pulford a labourer he embarked Hobart 20th October 1914 on board “HMAT Geelong” with the 12th Infantry Battalion. He died 9th September 1918 from accidental injuries in France and was buried in the Peronne Communal Cemetery Extension, Peronne, Somme, France On Thursday Mrs Pulford Snr of Ross received word that her son (Corporal Charles L Pulford) had been accidentally killed but no details were given. The news came as a great shock as Cpl Pulford was expected to arrive shortly on furlough being one of the original Anzacs. The deceased was the first to enlist at Ross. He was a corporal in the local detachment of the 92nd Infantry and was respected by his comrades and also by the general public. The sad news was broken by the rector of St John’s to his aged mother and relatives. Deep sympathy is felt for the relatives and friends. The Weekly Courier 10th October 1918 The Court finds that No 265 Pte Pulford C L 12th Bn attach 3rd A.L.T.M.B met his death by being struck by the base of a small minenwerfer shell immediately after he had fired a round from a German rifle at a bottle which had been placed as a target on a bank on top of a trench at Mont St Quentin at about 3 p.m. on the 9th September 1918
