Ratcliff, Eric Vernon Bird

 

Born 28th April 1893 Launceston Tasmania to Henry Edmeades and Ethel Annie Ratcliff (nee Bennell) a clerk who departed Melbourne 17th September 1914 on board “HMAT Geelong” with the with the 12th Infantry Battalion.

He was killed in action 24th July 1916 and is commemorated in the Pozieres British Cemetery Ovillers-La Boisselle, France.

 

Lance-Sergeant Eric Ratcliffe was killed in action in France on July 24. Eric, who is the second son of Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Ratcliffe, of Launceston, was 23 years of age. He enlisted at Launceston as a private and left with the first expeditionary force. He was wounded slightly at the historical landing at Gallipoli and promoted to the rank of corporal while there, and later to that of lance-sergeant. Prior to enlisting he was connected with the staff of Messrs. Alfred Harrap and Co of Launceston.
