Ravenor, Herbert

 

Herbert Ravenor

Born 21st August 1893 Speenhamland Newbury England to Richard and Charlotte Christian Ravenor (nee Bland) a planter who spent some years in British Central Africa and was the first man to grow tobacco there on a large scale.  Whilst there held 1st prize for marksmanship 5 years running in the B.C.A. Rifle Corps.

 

He embarked Melbourne 19th February 1915 on board “HMAT Runic” with the 15th Infantry Battalion.

Lance Corporal Ravenor received a bullet wound in the shoulder at Gallipoli and expatriated to Malta to recover.  He rejoined the 15th on the 11th August 1916 and was killed in action 27th August 1916 in France and is commemorated in the Pozieres British Cemetery Ovillers-La Boisselle, France.
