Reader, Albert Arthur
Born 16th June 1888 New Norfolk Tasmania to William and Hannah Reader (nee Woodhouse. Was Killed by a shrapnel bomb at the Battle of Lagnicourt. Lagnicourt was a German outpost of the Hindenburg Line. He received a Military Medal for bravery under heavy fire as a stretcher bearer on the 8 Apr 1917 Buried beside the road in an unmarked grave near Bullecourt Military Medal Recommendation date: 14th April 1917 Private Albert READER. Private Albert LONG. Private David McFARLANE. At BOURSIES, during operations 8/10 April 1917, Privates READER, LONG and McFARLANE worked unceasingly for three days and nights in constant fire from M.G. [Machine Gun] and shell fire. They rescued several badly wounded cases from exposed positions swept by M.G. fire and the course to the R.A.P. was through a very bad barrage zone. R.M.O. remarked on the efficiency of their dressings under stressing circumstances. Recommended by C.O. 12th Battalion
