Rollins, Vivian Ebenezer
Born 7th November 1885 Sandfly Tasmania the son of James Richard and Elizabeth Emma Rollins (nee Meredith) a farmer he embarked Hobart 1st July 1916 on board “HMAT Berrima” with the 40th Infantry Battalion
He was killed in action 5th November 1917 in Belgium and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium Second Lieutenant Alexander writes to Mr J R Rollins of Sandfly regarding the death of his son, Private Vivian Rollins, as follows – Dear Mr Rollins, I am writing to send you the sympathy of the boys and myself in the 15th Platoon. Viv. has been with us all along and we felt awfully sorry when he was killed. I have been with him as his sergeant first and then in charge of the platoon. We were in camp in England together after hospital, so you see I knew him quite well. He was one of the best men I have ever had and if they were only all as good they would do me. Well, Mr. Rollins, I can't write much about our sympathy but I think we do something better, we feel for both Viv and yourself and the rest of the family very very much. Viv was shot through the head and died immediately, so there's only one consolation for you; he didn't linger and suffer pain. Viv suffered a soldier's worst luck and did a lot of good work before they got him." The Mercury 31st January 1918
