Ross, Frank Colin
Mrs Ross of Mandeville, Southland has received word of the death of her son, Private Frank Colin Ross, who enlisted in Victoria with one the Australian contingents, leaving the Commonwealth in May 1916 and arriving in France in August. He was born at Wantwood homestead, Southland in 1886 and educated at the Mandellive public school. After leaving school, he took up cheesemaking and later managed the Wanganui dairy factory for Mr McDonald for three years.
He left for Australia, and with a partner
he established a dairy factory in Victoria but disposed
of his interest in it to take up the management of a
Government cheese factory in Tasmania. Private Ross was
the sixth son of the late Duncan Ross, and was a brother
of Mr A C Ross, Government grader, who is well known
throughout Southland and Otago. Another brother is his
Private James Oswald Ross who was killed on the
Gallipoli Peninsula in May 1915 and a third brother also
saw active service with the New Zealand Main Body being
finally invalided home. Two younger brothers also
volunteered but failed to pass the medical test Press, Volume LIII, Issue 15877, 17 April 1917, Page 8 New Zealand
