Rumney, Harold

Born 7th October 1874 Colebrook Tasmania the son of Walter and Elizabeth Rumney (nee Chipman) an orchardist he embarked Fremantle 19th April 1915 on board “HMAT Argyllshire” with the 12th Infantry Battalion.

He was killed in action 9th August 1915 on the Gallipoli Peninsula and is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli Peninsula,

THE LATE PRIVATE RUMNEY.

Our Nubeena correspondent writes : -

"Private Harold Rumney who a short time ago was reported to be missing is now reported as having been killed in action at Gallipoli, and the sympathy of all on the Peninsula is felt for Mrs. Geo. E. Clarke (his sister), Mr. Clarke, and his brothers, Messrs. E. and R. Rumney. Private Rumney is the first from Tasman Peninsula to give up his life for his country. Of a quiet and retiring disposition, he was well liked by all who knew him.  He sailed with the fourth reinforcements of the 12th Battalion, and in letters to his sister wrote that he would not have missed his experiences for anything. Ho was one of the first members of the Nubeena Rifle Club and no doubt the rifle practice he had was of service to him when in action.”
