Ryan, John Joseph
He was born Uxbridge Tasmania the son of James Ryan, a labourer who embarked Melbourne 21st October 1916 on board “HMAT Port Melbourne” with the 40th Infantry Battalion. Pte Ryan was killed in action 7th June 1917 and is commemorated in the Strand Military Cemetery, Belgium. Word was received at Uxbridge on Wednesday by his parents, by official cablegram, that Private J. J. (Jack) Ryan was killed in action in France on June 7. The deceased who was a leading sportsman in the district was the second son of Mr. and Mrs. James Ryan to enlist and had only been in France about a month. A younger brother, who enlisted earlier, has been in the firing line for some time. The Mercury 9th July 1917
