Saunders James Leslie

 

Born Bracknell Tasmania to John and Caroline Saunders (nee Jones) enlisted Queensland, a labourer who embarked Brisbane 24th September 1914 on board “HMAT Omrah” with the 9th Infantry Battalion and the rank of Corporal.

Company Sergeant Major Saunders was killed in action 22nd August 1916 at Moquet Farm and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France. 

In his will he asked his mother to erect a monument in memory of his brother Colin (No 977) who was killed in action 25th April 1915 on the Gallipoli Peninsula and is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
