Saunders, Alfred Frederick

Private Alfred Frederick Saunders

 

Born 1895 Campbell Town Tasmania the son of Thomas and Eliza Saunders (nee Smith) a labourer he embarked Melbourne 6th December 1917 on board “HMAT Orsova” with the 40th Infantry Battalion

 

He was killed in action 13th October 1917 (previously reported missing) in Belgium and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, West-Vlaanderen, Flanders, Belgium

 

On June 17th the Reverend J C Compton had the painful duty of conveying the sad news to Mr Thomas Saunders that his son Private Alfred Frederick Saunders who had previously been reported missing was now reported as killed in action on October 13th 1917 while fighting in France.  This is the second of Mr Saunders’ sons who has made the supreme sacrifice and there are two other sons in the firing line.  Private Saunders who belonged to the 40th Battalion was 22 years of age.
