WW1
Saunders, Harry Francis
Born 1st June 1894 Launceston Tasmania to William and Bridget Norris Saunders (nee Hills) a farmer who departed Hobart 24th October 1914 on board “HMAT Geelong” with the 12th Infantry Battalion.
A letter from the Chaplain at the 2/2 London Casualty Clearing Station wrote “He was admitted to this CCS with both legs badly shattered and amputation was necessary. He made a splendid fight and we quite hoped for a day or two that he would pull round. He was very cheerful and I am thankful to say, considering all things, had little pain. He was a splendid fellow and we all grew quite attached to him. It will comfort his people to know that he had every care and all possible was done for him. A leading London surgeon did everything to save him. I laid him to rest in the Grovetown Military Cemetery and his grave is marked by a cross and protected.” Lance Corporal Saunders was serving with the 13th Australian Trench Mortar Battery when he died of accidental injuries 5th April 1917
