Saunders, Roland Eugene Arthur
Born 186 Sorell Tasmania the son of William and Milbah Saunders (nee Harrex) a labourer he embarked Hobart 1st July 1916 on board “HMAT Berrima” with the 40th Infantry Battalion. He was killed in action 28th February 1917 in France and is commemorated in the Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, Armentieres, Lille, France. Mrs George Harrex Osterley has received the following letter from Lieutenant J. D. Loane:- "It is with deepest sympathy that I write to inform you of the circumstances surrounding the death of your brother, No. 1107, Private Rowland E, A. Saunders, who »vas killed on the evening of the 28th of February. He was out scouting, that being his particular work, and was shot through the head by a rifle bullet, which penetrated the brain, death resulting within half an hour. He was unconscious from the moment he was hit, and died painlessly. He was in my platoon from the time we left Tasmania, and his death was a great personal sorrow to me as he was always most reliable and willing, and I have always considered him a most efficient soldier. His work as a scout was of a very high standard. He was very popular amongst his comrades, who feel their loss keenly. His personal effects will no doubt he forwarded to you in due course."
