Sawford, Percy Charles

 

Born 7th November 1886 Oatlands Tasmania the son of John and Eliza Mary Sawford (nee Powell) a farmer he embarked Melbourne 17th July 1915 on board “HMAT Orsova” with the 26th Infantry Battalion.  

He was killed in action 12th November 1915 when he was shot in the head on the Gallipoli Peninsula and is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli Peninsula, Canakkale Province, Turkey

Private Percy Charles Sawford who was killed in action at the Dardanelles on November 12, was the second son of Mrs. Eliza Sawford, widow of the late Mr. John Sawford, of Baden. Percy was a good all round cricketer and footballer, and did yeoman service for his club (Baden, or Woodbanks, as it was more frequently called). A quiet, unassuming young fellow, only 29 years of age, the Midlands of Tasmania mourns the death of another gallant hero, and deeply sympathises with his family and relatives.
