Sayer, William Samuel

Born 6th January 1877 Richmond Victoria the son of Benjamin and Annie Sayer married to Ada Cecilia Porter an accountant he embarked Sydney 14th June 1917 on board “HMAT Hororata” with the 12th Infantry Battalion.

He was killed in action 23rd April 1918 in France and is commemorated in the Meteren Military Cemetery

Official information was received in Wynyard yesterday afternoon of the death of Lieut. W. Sayer which occurred on the 3rd inst. The deceased was well known and very popular in the Table Cape district and the news of his death was received with much regret. He went all through the South African war with a South Australian regiment. He was also associated with the militia and was regarded as a capable and promising officer. At the time of his enlistment he was secretary to the Table Cape Butter Factory and prior to taking up that position was in the employ of the River Don Trading Company at Wynyard and also at Devonport. Sincere sympathy is felt for Mrs. Sayer and her three little children in their great loss.
