Schreck William Gotlieb
Born in St. Marys, on the 6th of April 1895 the son of Herman William and Florence Elizabeth Schreck (nee Downes) of New Road Franklin he moved to New Zealand at the age of 16 to become an apprentice cheese maker with his uncle, a Mr. K. Rothe of Riverlea, near Taranaki. When war broke out, so the family story goes, he tried to come back to Tasmania, but New Zealand had closed its borders, and he was not allowed to leave. He eventually joined the Royal New Zealand Expeditionary Force (serial number 54604) on the 24th of February 1917. He was in the infantry, and left for France on the 23rd of October 1917. He was reported missing on the 12th of September 1918, and was subsequently found killed in action. He was buried at Snap Reserve, French Cemetery, 8 and 3/4 miles South West of Cambria.
