Sharland, Charles Frederic 

 

Born Westbury Tasmania the son of The Rev. Frederick Burnett and Ella Georgina Sharland a bank clerk he embarked Melbourne 23rd September 1916 on board “HMAT Seang Choon” with the 40th Battalion and the rank of 2nd Lieutenant.

 

He spent two years in the Tasmanian volunteers and completed Officers Training School at Claremont and later passed 1st Officer’s Training school, Duntroon.

 

He was killed about 8.00 a.m on the 12th October 1917 during the attack on Passchendaele by a bullet through the head from a sniper and died instantly.  He had just seen all his men placed in shell holes and was about to take cover himself when he met his death.
