He was killed in action 9th May 1915 on the Gallipoli Peninsula and is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli Peninsula Turkey HAMILTON SOLDIER'S DEATH. Our Hamilton correspondent writes: "The rector of Hamilton at the evening service at St. Peter's on Sunday, 2nd inst. referred in sympathetic terms to the death of Private Herbert Harold Shearing. 15th- Battalion, A.I.F., killed in action at Gallipoli Peninsula on May 9, 1915, formerly reported missing. Mr. Shearing, whose parents reside in Hobart and who was a linesman under the Commonwealth Government had been stationed at Hamilton for about a couple of years, and the rector said he had during that time made himself liked and respected by everyone, was a good church-man and a good friend and when the war broke out was one of the earliest men to enlist, and the first from the district. At the close of the service the 'Dead March' in 'Saul' was feelingly rendered by Mrs. Morgan at the organ as a tribute of respect to the deceased soldier." The Mercury 11th July 1916
