Studio portrait of Lieutenant Raymond (Ray) Sherwin MC, 12th Battalion from Launceston, Tasmania. A 23 year old clerk prior to being appointed a Second Lieutenant in the AIF on 24 June 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 14th Reinforcements from Melbourne on 8 February 1916 aboard HMAT Warilda. While serving on the Western Front, he was awarded a Military Cross for gallantry during operations at Pozieres, France between 23 and 26 July 1916 and was promoted to Lieutenant on 31 July 1916. He was killed in action at Boursies, France on 8 April 1917 and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
