Shields, Audley
Born on 22 Jun 1878, the youngest of nine children born to George Shields and Isabella Buchan Shields (ne Mowatt ) and married to Catherine Foster, a law clerk, he was a wireless guard on Flinders Island for four months before enlisting with the 15th Battalion and embarked Melbourne 17th July 1915 on board “HMAT Orsova” with the 15th Infantry Battalion. He was transferred to the 47th Battalion in Mar 1916 and served in Egypt and France before he was killed in action at Messines Belgium on 9 Jun 1917 and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium. Yesterday Hon. Tas Shields. M.L.C., received confirmation from the Base Records Office in Melbourne of the death of his brother, Sergeant Audley Shields, who was killed in action in France on June 9. Deceased, who was 39 years of age enlisted in Tasmania in July, 1915, and left in March, 1916 with reinforcements. He served in Egypt until May, 1916, and from then till the time of his death was on active service in France. He was the youngest brother of the well-known Launceston family, and a widower, with one child. Examiner Launceston 16th July 1917
