Shires, Abel Abraham
Born 1889 Wynyard Tasmania the son of Thomas and Caroline Shires (nee Manning) a labourer he embarked Sydney 14th June 1917 on board “HMAT Hororata” with the 40th Infantry Battalion. He died 30th August 1918 from wounds received in the field and was buried in the Hem Farm Military Cemetery, Hem-Monacu, France Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Shires, of Wynyard, have been officially informed that their son Pte. Abel Abraham, died of wounds on August 31. Another son, James, is still fighting, and a third, Tom, has been invalided home. The other sons volunteered, but were rejected owing to their inability to pass the doctor. The Rev. A. E. Salisbury conveyed the sad tidings of the death of the eldest son, and expressed his deep sympathy with the family. The North Western Advocate 16th September 1918
