Smail Robert

 

 

Born Scotland the son of Elizabeth Smail of 14 Dank Street Albert Park Victoria and a petty officer on board HMAS AE1 with the Royal Australian Navy who lost his life along with 35 other men on the 14th September 1914 when the submarine disappeared in St George's Channel, New Britain, Papua New Guinea.

No trace of the AE1 or its crew has ever been found.

 He is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, United Kingdom.
