Smart, Benjamin Frederick
Born 26th June 1896 Wynyard Tasmania the son of William Henry and Mary Ann Smart (nee Hay) a labourer he embarked Hobart 8th May 1916 on board “HMAT Seang Choon” with the 12th Infantry Battalion. Lance Sergeant Smart was killed in action 30th April 1918 in France and is commemorated in the Mericourt-L'Abbe Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
By the last mail from the front Mrs. M. A. Pcgg of Somerset, received several letters of condolence with reference to the death of her son, Pte Benjamin Smart. Amongst them is one from Lieut. T. G. Cranswick, who offers the sympathy of the platoon which he is in charge of, and in which the deceased soldier served. Lieut. Cranswick adds that Pte. Smart was thought a lot of by his comrades, and he (the writer) could not speak too highly of his qualities as a soldier, the duties allotted to him being carried out thoroughly and cheerfully, while his manly disposition made him a general favorite. Pte Smart was killed during a small raid on an enemy outpost early in May; when the raiding party reached their objective a German hand grenade exploded, causing his death. His comrades carried his body back to their lines, and it was buried the next day. The North Western Advocate 15th July 1918
