Smith, Bert
He was born Westbury Tasmania the son of Jane Smith, a blacksmith who departed Melbourne 27th October 1915 on board “HMAT Ulysses” with the 15th Infantry Battalion. He was killed in action 28th March 1918 in France and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France. The Rev. A. C. Sanderson, M.A. conveyed the sad message to Mrs. J. Smith of Bell-street Beaconsfleld that her son Private Bert (Nob.) Smith, late of the 15th Battalion, was killed in action on March 28. Private Smith enlisted at Zeehan and had been three years on active service. He was severely wounded in the Somme battle and after recovery returned to France. Private Smith was a fine stamp of a soldier, standing 6ft. 2in., and when living at Beaconsfield was one of the mainstays of the Rover Football Club. The sympathy of the people of Beaconsfield is extended to Mrs. Smith. Her other son (Charlie) is in France. Examiner Launceston 30th April 1918
