Smith, Claud Huon
Born 1893 Huonville Tasmania the son of William Ernest and Letitia Smith (nee Wise) a farmer of Green Hill Colebrook he embarked Brisbane 29th June 1915 on board “HMAT Aeneas” with the 26th Infantry Battalion
He served in Gallipoli and when he became ill was transferred to Malta and from there was taken by the hospital ship “Regina D’Italia” to England where he was admitted to the Southern General Hospital in Birmingham. On recovery he served in Egypt and then on to France. On the 27th December 1916 he was promoted to Corporal. He was killed in action 20th September 1917 in Belgium and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium. His brother Keith Lawrence Smith (No 4601) died in France 17th August 1916 from wounds received in the field and was buried in the Wimereux Communal Cemetery, France.
