Smith, Hedley
Born Richmond Tasmania the son of Samuel and Bridget Smith (nee Cash) a farm labourer he embarked Melbourne 19th February 1915 on board “HMAT Runic” with the 12th Infantry Battalion. He was killed in action 14th March 1918 in Belgium and is commemorated in the Spoilbank Cemetery, Ypres, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. His brothers Percy Smith died 28th March 1918 in France and Eric Smith died 12th October 1917 in Belgium. Mr. and Mrs S Smith of Richmond have received information through the military authorities that their fourth son Hedley was killed in action in France on the 14th of March. « ' He served in Egypt was at the landing at Gallipoli and had been on active service three years, hating left Claremont on February 3. 1915 He is the second son of the family to pay the supreme sacrifice and two others are still at the front The Mercury 4th April 1918
