Spillane, Daniel John
Born 24th July 1895 Launceston Tasmania to Maurice and Mary Spillane (nee Maley) he departed Melbourne 17th April 1915 on board “HMAT Hororata” with the 15th Infantry Battalion. He was reported missing 3 weeks after his arrival in Gallipoli which was later reported killed in action 9th August 1915 and is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey. Unfortunately for his family nothing was ever found of his personal effects. Mr. and,Mrs. M. Spillane, Launceston have received official news through Monsignor Beechinor that their son, Private Daniel J. Spillane, 15th Battalion (previously reported missing), was killed in action on August 9, 1915, and conveying the deepest regret and sympathy of their Majesties the King and Queen and Commonwealth Government and District Commandant, in the loss sustained by them and the army. The deceased soldier was born at Bridgenorth. As a boy he worked at Strathlynn, Rosevears, subsequently coning to Launceston where he was well known. Prior to the outbreak of war he was an employee of the BriEris Tin Mining Co., Derby. Examiner Launceston 23rd May 1916
