Stephens, George Ernest Greenhill

 

 

Born 1896 Beulah Tasmania the son of George William and Geraldine Mary Stephens (nee Greenhill) a bicycle mechanic who embarked Hobart 13th December 1915 on board “HMAT Ajana” with the 26th Infantry Battalion.

 He was serving with the 12th Battalion when he was killed in action 19th August 1916 at Pozieres and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.

Mr. G. W. Stephens, manager of Messrs. E. T. Clements and Co.'s Burnie office has received the intelligence that his eldest son. Private George E. G. Stephens, was killed in action between August 19 and 22. The deceased voung soldier, who had not yet reached his 21st year, enlisted at Burnie a year ago and after serving with the 26th Battalion in Egypt he went to France with the 12th Battalion, and was attached to the Lewis machine gun section. Sergt. W. Andrewaitha who was recently killed in action was a relative of his while his younger brother, who is home on final leave, returns to Claremont from Burnie today. Recently Mr Stephens offered his services, but was turned down by the medical team
