Tapner, William

Born 21st May 1896 Spring Bay Tasmania to Thomas and Elizabeth Tapner (nee Gleaves) he was a labourer when he enlisted and was posted to the 40th Battalion.  He embarked 1st July 1916 on “HMAT Berrima”.

This letter has been received by Mr. and Mrs. Tapner, of 46 George Street, North Hobart:-

"France, -. Dear Mr. and Mrs. Tapner,-I am writing to send you the deepest sympathy of the boys and myself belonging to No. 15 platoon. I have been with Bill all through. I was his sergeant in Claremont, and have been in charge of the 15th platoon now for some time, and to know your son really well. We were all very sorry to lose Bill. He was one of my best and pluckiest soldiers, and was loved by every one who knew him. He was mentioned in despatches before, and did really good work this time. He was shot through the head, and so one consolation is that he did not suffer any pain. We are all very sorry about it, Mr. and Mrs.Tapner and realise you have lost a good  son. All the officers and men wish me to tell you how they felt for you all. Bill suffered a soldier's worst luck, but accounted for some - before they got him.- I remain, yours sincerely, Lieut. D.Alexander."
