WW1
Thorne, Cecil Benjamin
Born 1895 Waratah Tasmania to James Henry and Mary Jane Thorne (nee Schofield) he embarked Hobart 20th October 1914 on board “HMAT Geelong” with the 12th Infantry Battalion. He was killed in action 6th January 1917 and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France. His brother, Pte Hubert Cyril Thorne (No 977) was also killed in action 27th June 1918 in France and he too is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery, France.
Yet another Waratah lad has made the supreme sacrifice in the cause of Liberty. A wave of sorrow passed over the community on Tuesday when it became known that Pte Cecil Thorne had been killed in action in France He was among the first to enlist from Waratah and took part in the famous landing at Gallipoli and after some strenuous fighting was wounded serverely on June 9th 1915. As a result of this wound the late Pte Thorne was invalided home and the reception that he received was a striking testimony to the esteem in which he is held. After a few weeks' rest Pte Thorne again proceeded to the front, and was engaged in several big battles on the Somme before he fell Sincere sympathy is extended to his parents and other relatives.
