TILYARD HENRY CLAUDE
Studio portrait, taken prior to enlistment, of 2650 Private (Pte) Henry Claude Tilyard, 40th Battalion, of Glenorchy, Tas. A labourer before enlisting on 2 October 1916, Pte Tilyard embarked from Melbourne on HMAT Ulysses (A38) on 25 October 1916 with the 5th Reinforcements. He was killed in action on 28 March 1918 in France, at the age of 35, and is buried in the Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-L'Abbé.
Mrs. J. Tilyard of Glenorchy has received from the officer commanding the platoon the following letter relative to the death of Private H. C. Tilyard who was killed in France on March 28:- "l am indeed sorry to pen these few lines to you regarding the death of your son who was a man in every sense of the word and a better soldier I never wish to have. He was thorough in his work and one that could be depended on and was a favourite with all the boys. At the time he was killed I was away from the company and only joined up a day or two ago. There are some gaps in the ranks of my platoon, I am sorry to say, and some are like your poor boy will never come back. It is hard to lose such fine men, but they are dying for the noblest of causes. You have my most sincere sympathy in your sad bereavement and may God give you and yours strength to withstand the great blow that has been dealt you." France. April 1, 1918. The Mercury 28th June 1918
