Townsend, Francis Frederick
Born Burnie Tasmania to William Henry and Katherine Mary Townsend, a prospector, who departed Melbourne on board “HMAT Ulysses” with the 26th Infantry Battalion. He was serving with the 17th Battalion when he was caught by a shell which severed his right leg at Passchendaele Ridge and later died 8th October 1917 from that wound and was buried Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium. He was 18 years old when he died Military Medal At Boursies on the night of 9/10 April 1917 when enemy counter attacked on right of Main Rd occupied trenches Pte Townsend bombed the enemy out from about 20 yards, he then opened fire with rifle and grenades which caused the enemy to evacuate the position thus assisting in repelling the attack on the left of the Main Road.
