Portrait of 2733 Private (Pte) Harold Raymond Trethewie, 8th Reinforcements, 12th Battalion, of Hagley, Tas. A farmer prior to enlisting at Claremont on 13 July 1915, he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Makarini on 10 September 1915. Pte Trethewie was killed in action on 5 May 1917, in France, aged 24 years.

The following cable was received by Rev T Smith of Hagley last week

“Officially reported that No 2733 Private Harold Raymond (Harry) Trethewie was killed in action between 5 and 8 May”.

Mr Smith had the painful duty of breaking the sad news to the family for whom the greatest sympathy is felt.  Pte Trethewie was a son of Mr and Mrs W. J Trethewie of “Montrose” Hagley.  He enlisted in July 1915 and had been in France for 13 months
