Turnbull, Fred Herbert

  

Born 12th February 1897 Emu Bay to Alexander and Sarah Ann Turnbull (nee Pease) he embarked Brisbane 29th June 1915 on board “HMAT Aeneas” with the 26th Infantry Battalion.

 Pte Turnbull was serving with the 7th Company Machine Gun Corps when he was killed in action 5th August 1916 and as he has no known grave is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.

Advice was received from the Defence Department on Monday that Private Fred H Turnbull was killed in action in France on August 5. The news was conveyed to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alex Turnbull of Carrick, by the Rev. Canon J. K Wilmer. Private Turnbull left Tasmania as a member of the 26th Battalion in May. 1915, and was right through the Gallipoli campaign. Since March 1916, he had been serving with a machine gun section in France.
