If you could spare a few dollars to help with the running costs of hosting this website to keep it alive would be very much appreciated.

Thankyou from Gravesites of Tasmania in advance.

Walkem George Lenpolt

Born 29th September 1889 Longford Tasmania to John Walter and Lilian Grace Walkem (nee Ricketts) a farmer who departed Melbourne 25th September 1916 on board “HMAT Shropshire” with the 59th Infantry Battalion.

Military Medal

At Delsaux farm on the 19th March 1917 Corporal Walkem displayed conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty.  During the attack on Delsaux farm by the vanguard on the 18th inst Cpl Walkem carried messages backwards and forwards to the firing line under heavy machine gun and rifle fire.  The fire was very accurate and when it was found necessary to make a flanking movement the only means of sending messages was by runner.  Volunteers were called for and Cpl Walkem volunteered as one and successfully accomplished his mission.  The act greatly contributed to the success of the operation which resulted in the position being captured.

He was killed in action 8th August 1918 and is buried Heath Cemetery, Harbonnieres, France.
