Watkinson, Arthur Henry

 

Born 1896 Launceston Tasmania to Arthur and Mary Jane Watkinson (nee Sloane) a harness maker he embarked Melbourne 19th February 1915 on board “HMAT Runic” with the 12th Infantry Battalion.

Sergeant Watkinson was killed in action 9th August 1915 on the Gallipoli Peninsula and is commemorated in the Shell Green Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.

The following cable was received yesterday by the local Salvation Army officer:-"Officially reported killed in action 5th August, No. 1661, Corporal A. H Watkinson, 40 Abbott Street, Launceston. Deepest regret and sympathy of their Majesties the King and Queen and the Commonwealth Government as well as the District Commandant, in the loss sustained by them and the army." The late Corporal Watkinson was a member of the local Salvation Army Band and left in January with the reinforcements. He was for a considerable period in the employment of Mr. J. Fotheringham. The news was conveyed to his parents by Adjutant Clark, of the S.A., Launceston.
