Webb, William Ernest
Born 11th July 1898 Emu Bay Tasmania the son of Charles and Jane May Webb (nee Laird) he embarked Hobart 1st July 1916 on board “HMAT Berrima” with the 40th Infantry Battalion. He was killed in action 30th January 1917 in France and is commemorated on the Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, Armentieres, Lille, France. In a letter of sympathy to Mrs White of Mooreville Road on the death of her son Lance-Corpl W. E. Webb, Major L. H. Payne says: — 'Your son was by reason of' his happy disposition and unflagging cheerfulness the favorite of the company, while as a soldier he had become efficient, capable, and reliable. It was a pleasure to work with him and he gave promise of making a first class non-commissioned officer. He died at his post nobly for a noble cause.' The North Western Advocate 31st May 1917
