Whitney William Alfred

 

 

Studio portrait of 6915 Private (Pte) William Alfred Whitney, 24th Battalion, from Fitzroy, Vic, (born in Hobart, Tas). Pte Whitney enlisted on 9 August 1917; he served on the Somme and was killed in action on 1 September 1918 while working as a stretcher bearer at Mont St Quentin, France. He is buried in Peronne Communal Cemetery Extension.

 

Mrs. R. Finearty of Cascade Road, received news yesterday that her brother William Whitney was killed in action on September 1. He was well-known in racing circles throughout Tasmania also by members of the late Hobart Hunt Club and the Royal Hunt Club of Victoria his last charge being with Mr. E. A. Peacock's well-known string with which he carried off many prizes on Tasmanian and Victorian showgrounds. He leaves a wife and five children. His two younger brothers, Percy and Keith are at the front.
