Whittle, Eric Arthur
Born 1893 Evandale Tasmania the son of Edward and Rose Anna Whittle (nee Benneworth) an engine driver he embarked Sydney 14th June 1917 on board “HMAT Hororata” with the 12th Infantry Battalion. He was serving with the 40th Battalion when he was killed in action 31st August 1918 in France and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial.
PENGUIN. Sincere regret was expressed locally when news was received that Pte. Eric Whittle had been killed in action on August 31. Pte. Whittle was the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Whittle. Ex-Trooper Whittle, father of the deceased soldier did service with the 1st Remount Corps, but returned from Egypt and was discharged. Ex- L.-Corporal Charles Whittle (brother, who returned wounded and has since been discharged, received the Military Medal and a certificate for bravery from Major-General McLagan The North Western Advocate 17th September 1918
