Whittle, William Alfred
Born 26th December 1895 Launceston Tasmania to William Alfred and Elizabeth Whittle (nee Reynolds) a farmer who embarked from Melbourne 5th January 1916 on board “HMAT Afric” with the 6th Field Artillery Brigade. Whilst travelling to Armentieres 31st March 1916 in a bus the driver lost control and the bus fell over into the canal. All the men escaped except Pte Whittle who was drowned. His body was recovered and artifical respiration was applied without success. He was buried in the Merville Communal Cemetery, France. WHITTLE.--In loving memory of Gunner William Alfred Whittle, only son of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Whittle, "Wattle Corner." Blessington, who was accidentally drowned in a motor accident whilst on active service In France, on March 31, 1916. aged 20 years.
