Whittles John Ellison
Born 1891 Hawthorn Victoria the son of John Gibson and Annie Francis Whittles (nee Edmead) a tobacconist he embarked Sydney 5th June 1916 on board “HMAT Borda” with the 26th Infantry Battalion. He qualified for his commission at officer’s training school Broadmeadows in 1916 and although he embarked as a sergeant was recommended for his commission while on active service. Two brothers also served. He was killed in action 11th April 1917 at Bullecourt in France and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, Picardie, France. The sad news of the death of Sergeant Jack Whittles came to hand on Saturday. He lived at Bellerive with his parents for a long time before going to the front and was kept in camp in Victoria for some time as he was good at training men. He was due for his lieutenancy when he was killed in France. He was very popular. Our sympathy goes out to his family and to Miss B Dobson-Hesp (grand daughter of Mr S Dobson-Hesp of Bellerive) whom he was engaged to be married. The Weekly Courier 17th May 1917
