Studio portrait of 3366 Private (Pte) Harry John Williams, 12th Battalion from Ulverstone, Tasmania. An 18 year old platelayer prior to enlisting on 1 September 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 7th Reinforcements from Hobart, Tasmania on 13 December 1915 aboard HMAT Ajana. After arriving in France, he transferred to the 12th Battalion and was killed in action at Pozieres on 19-22 August 1916. Pte Williams is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave

On Friday last Mr and Mrs John Williams of Branxholm, received official notification that their son Pte Harry John Williams who had been reported missing between 19th and 22nd August 1916 was now reported killed in action. This young soldier was only 19 years of age and enlisted at Ulverstone on his 18th birthday. Prior to enlisting he was employed in the railway workshops at Ulverstone. His brother Pte George H Williams is on active service.
