Winburn, Horace Stewart
Born Mathinna Tasmania a school teacher who listed his brother Percy Winburn as his next of kin he embarked Hobart 1st July 1916 on board “HMAT Berrima” with the 40th Infantry Battalion and the rank of Corporal. Sgt Winburn was killed in action 13th October 1917 in Belgium and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial. The many friends of Sergeant Horace Stewart Winburn will be pleased to hear that his relatives have received news that he has been mentioned in despatches for gallant conduct and conspicuously good work during the Messines offensive. Prior to enlisting Sergeant Winburn was teaching in the East Launceston Practising School. Examiner Launceston 15th October 1917 On Thursday afternoon the sad news was received by the relatives of Sergt, Horace Winburn at Ulverstone that he was reported missing since October 13. Only a short time ago word was received that he had been mentioned in despatches for gallant conduct during the Messines offensive. Sergt. Winburn was a grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Atwater of Longford, and prior to enlisting was on the teaching staff at East Launceston Practising School. The North Western Advocate 20th November 1917
