Woods, Sidney William

 

Born 9th February 1892 Cygnet Tasmania he son of William and Rebecca Woods (nee Lovell) of Huonville Tasmania a farmer he embarked Hobart 1st July 1916 on board “HMAT Berrima” with the 40th Infantry Battalion

 Admitted to the A.D.S. Menin Road after being gassed and with shell wounds which he later died from 16th October 1917 and is commemorated in the Menin Road South Military Cemetery, Belgium.

Pte Sid. Woods was a native of Ranelagh and 26 years of age. He enlisted on the 2nd January; 1916 and joined the 40th Battalion. He took part in several of the big Somme battles being seven times in and out of the trenches. He was wounded on one occasion from shrapnel, but soon recovered and returned to the firing line and was killed on the 16th October last
