Baker Major Percy Hadlow Baker died suddenly at his home, 288 Davey St., Hobart, yesterday morning. He was aged 45 years, and had been in poor health for about eight weeks. Major Baker came to Tasmania with his parents from England when he was 14. He was the eldest son of Mrs S. H. Baker and the late Mr Baker. His parents established a store at Moonah, known as Baker's Corner, which is still retained by the family. As a young man, Major Baker joined the Railway Dept. He served in the First World War with the 40th Battalion, and in 1940 re-entered the Army on loan from the Railway Dept. to take charge of movement control-the transport of- military personnel. Before he was transferred to the Army, Major Baker was a member of the Moonah Baptist Church, and played a prominent part in church work. Later he moved to Davey St., and was associated with the Davey St. Methodist Church. He leaves a widow, two daughters, members of the women's services, and a young son. A military funeral will be held today and cremation service will take place at the Crematorium Chapel. The Mercury 4 May 1944
